Fate of the Sun King (Artefacts of Ouranos #3) by Nisha J Tuli

OML – I nearly broke my kindle reading this!  It was about to get chucked against the wall then stamped on.  Then I remembered that there is still book 4 to come and I managed to get my blood pressure back to semi normal!!!!

Lor and Nadir are like the ultimate power couple.  She’s all untapped magic, pent up rage and sarcastic humour to cover her trauma and he’s the bad boy Fae, with a tender heart and a supportive streak.  Nadir should be a narcissistic playboy but he’s managed to preserve his soul playing Fae politics!

Lor still has trouble taking anything or anyone at face value – always waiting for that other shoe to drop or the sleaze to ooze through someone’s personality.  Her relationship with Nadir definitely suffers for it.  But I love the way that Nadir and his comrades are just there for Lor and her family. They become an epic extended family. The traumatic childhood and time incarcerated has affected Lor, Tristan and Willow in different ways but they are stronger for it and refuse to allow it to define them.  Willow may not have the powers of her siblings but that girl is cunning and sly and would make a perfect Spy Commander!

Gabriel actually redeems himself a bit in this book.  We learn more about his backstory and just why he’s so obedient to a man he clearly hates.  There is a lot of redemption being sought in this storyline.  There are many POV’s in the book which adds to the complexity and pacing of the story but not so many that you get lost.

That cliffhanger is a doozy and as I’ve already said – I kind of wanted to unalive the kindle because of it!

AUTHOR BIO

A.K. Evans is a contemporary romance author of over forty published novels. While she enjoys writing a good romantic suspense novel, Andrea’s favorite books to write have been her extreme sports romances. That might have something to do with the fact that she, along with her husband and two sons, can’t get enough of extreme sports.

Before becoming a writer, Andrea did a brief stint in the insurance and financial services industry and managed her husband’s performance automotive business. That love of extreme sports? She used to drive race cars!

When Andrea isn’t writing, she can be found homeschooling her two sons, doing yoga, snowboarding, reading, or traveling with her family. She and her husband are currently taking road trips throughout the country to visit all 50 states with their boys.

Harlow has a blooming business as a hair stylist, she owns her own home and she has a loving family and some great friends. But she can’t help feeling that life is passing her by. She’s not brave or adventurous and everyday things that others take for granted she has missed out on.

After plucking up the courage to try online dating she suffers through the date from he((. Thankfully Blaze was at a neighbouring table and acted as her white knight. From that meet-cute these two blossom into one of the cutest, sweetest and adventurous couples at HSO!

Blaze is everything that Harlow wants to be: outgoing, adventurous, experienced. He’s also kind, determined and patient – all things Harlow needs to let her shine!

I loved the fraught opening – wondering what on earth happens that leads Harlow into that situation. Then the super slow burn and intense chemistry between Harlow and Blaze is just – mwaaah perfection. Blaze never makes Harlow feel less than and at times is stumped by her reaction to otherwise banal comments. But once things are explained we realise that whilst smart and savvy she is also terribly naïve and inexperienced in certain areas.

I love getting to see all the previous couples pop in and out of the following stories – it’s like seeing old friends. Roll on the next book!

Kilt Trip by Alexandra Kiley

Ready or Scot…

Globetrotter Addie Macrae always follows her wanderlust. As a travel consultant, she jet sets around the world—anywhere but Scotland. But when she’s sent on assignment to help a struggling family-run tour company in the Highlands—and save her own job—Addie packs away her emotional baggage and turns on the professional charm.

Rugged as the land he loves, Logan Sutherland’s greatest joy is sharing the beauty of Scotland’s hidden gems…even if it means a wee bit of red ink on the company’s bottom line. The last thing Logan wants is some American “expert” pushing tourist traps and perpetuating myths about the Loch Ness Monster—especially when Addie never leaves her desk to experience the country for herself.

As they wage an office war, Logan discovers Addie’s secret connection to Scotland: a handful of faded Polaroids of her late mother. Hoping for a truce, he creates a private tour to the places in the pictures to help Addie find closure and appreciate the enchantment in less-traveled destinations, never expecting the off-limits attraction sparking between them. But Addie’s contract is almost up, and magic won’t pay the bills. They can’t afford distractions, but how can Addie do her job if she hasn’t explored all Scotland—and Logan—have to offer?

When you’re Scottish, you always give Scottish set romances a weary eye.  Sometimes you wonder if the author has ever read anything about Scotland, never mind researched it or even visited it.  However this has been added to my “acceptable list” lol

I loved the enthusiasm for the history and scenery of Scotland. Sadly not all my countrymen look like Logan or even know how to tune a kilt.  But the story more than makes up for any wee blips.  The story also appealed to me as I once was a travel agent so all that work dealing with passengers, providers, etc brought back some memories!

Addie has a major case of wanderlust brought on by the death of her mum. Logan loves showing off the less well travelled areas of Scotland but the family company is still struggling.

Addie and Logan may be opposites in personality but they have a lot of commonalities, loneliness, family resentments and both are very determined to live life their way. They also hide a soft centre that they don’t often let others see.

There are smexy scenes but they are not graphic or particularly spicy.  The banter is great and the dialogue almost sounds right in my head (but Scotland has a lot of accents so that can be forgiven) but very few men, especially younger ones will ever call you lass.

I have read a few of this author’s other books, but not anything from this series.  However, I easily centred myself in the world and was able to keep all the characters in line.

I loved reading this story – what a fabulously Latinx-centred world. Theresa loves her horses, way more than she loves most people.  She could have come across as a spoiled rich girl but she is full of grit, determination and empathy.  Matt is the perfect image of tall, dark and handsome.  He does have a bit of a chip on his shoulder when it comes to rich girls, but to be quite frank, after reading what he went through I’d have a chip the size of NY on my shoulder too!

The chemistry between Matt and Theresa was palpable and they smoothed each other’s edges.  Everyone else could see the attraction before they did, lol. But the star of the show for me was Butter – I am a sucker for a K9 and she was an angel.  She wasn’t the perfect working dog but she was a new addition to the team so little foibles are to be expected.

There were some great secondary characters and enough twists to keep me intrigued.  I’d happily read more books in this series!

Skies Over Caledonia (The Highlands #4) by Samantha Young

He’s a down-to-earth highland farmer. She’s the rebellious daughter of Hollywood royalty. They might seem like they’re from different worlds, but that won’t stop them from engaging in a marriage of convenience…

It’s been five years since Jared McCulloch’s grandfather Collum passed away and he inherited his farm in the Scottish Highlands. After his grandad saved him from his past life, Jared is determined to honor Collum’s legacy. But not only has a series of bad luck put him in danger of losing the farm, his estranged father is disputing the will. In a desperate situation, Jared realizes he’ll do just about anything to save the land.

Even marrying Allegra Howard, a woman he’s avoided at all costs.

A woman who tempts him beyond reason.

There’s only one place that makes Allegra Howard feel safe; one place that feeds her artist’s soul. Allegra wants to settle down in Scotland and expand her business. But there’s a hitch: immigration intends to return her to US soil.

Panicked, Allegra finds the one person just as desperate as she is. The same person she’s lusted after for years. In exchange for marrying her, she’ll invest financially in Jared McCulloch’s farm.

However, living together only forces them to acknowledge their searing mutual attraction. And with it comes an undeniable emotional connection Jared’s not sure he’s ready for.

Yet, blurring the lines of their arrangement is the least of his concerns when someone begins terrorizing the farm.

Allegra and Jared came together to save what matters most and now that might just be each other. And unless they can figure out which of their pasts has returned to torment them, they could lose their chance at a real future together…

Back to Ardnoch we go for some more homegrown hottie heroes and the women who bring them to their knees.

Allegra loves Scotland. Here she can just be Allegra – she’s not famous, she’s not so and so’s daughter. But after a brush with Customs she may not be able to get back for a while. How on Earth will she survive without access to her haven?

Jared has kept his distance from Allegra. Let her think he doesn’t really like her. It’s better than getting to close to the beautiful American and then have her leave him behind. He’s a farmer, she’s Hollywood royalty – they shouldn’t ever have met. But his grandads farm is in trouble and Allegra has the cash he needs. So a little marriage of convenience can solve both their problems. Maybe. Or will the problems multiply?

There’s heartbreak, tension, intense chemistry and of course beautiful Scottish scenery. There are more than a few steamy moments between these two. And when Jared starts with the “my Wife” comments I was done for! No one writes Scottish romance better then a Scot and we Scottish romance readers love it when the dialogue and idiom are just right. Sadly not all foreign born writers get it right.

Perfect!

Caveman Alien’s Prey (Caveman Aliens #22) by Calista Skye

Piper may have been spat out on Xren but she is determined not to become a victim. She left her friend and her tribes behind as she wanted to be her own woman, beholden to no one and free to do as she wants.

Brak is a very unique caveman. His lifegiver had a little added extra when he was grown and he has some very unique talents when hunting. His infatuation with Piper aside, he is actually a kind male and looks after his little band of lost and broken souls very well.

Together Piper and Brak may look unusual but both feel like their outsiders. I loved Piper’s relationship with Plink! Her evolution was a major surprise I’ll admit! Brak goes a bit overboard in his protectiveness but once shown the error of his ways he does actually learn. Piper is very accepting of his oddities in personality and looks. I did want to smack the Shaman a tome or two over his attitude to Piper but I suppose at his age he feared change.
