Hester Fox

Hello readers, I’m so excited to share an excerpt with you from my debut novel, THE WITCH OF WILLOW HALL (on-sale October 2, 2018). My name is Hester Fox, and hailing from Boston, I’ve always been fascinated with the rich and oftentimes dark history of this period. My novel takes place in a small New England town over 130 years after the infamous Salem Witch trials, and features a Gothic, melancholy atmosphere, restless spirits, and of course, resilient women. I hope you enjoy this excerpt I’ve pulled for you.

~*~

Gingerly, I get up, my legs full of pins and needles from sitting on the floor so long. Just like the night of the woman in the garden, I can’t stay in the library knowing that someone might be there. I must go and look for myself.
Even with the sun coming through the windows, illuminating the wood floors and catching the light of the crystal lamps, I feel as if I’m making my way through a dark, murky passage. My feet are heavy, as if they know something that my mind does not.
The door to the dining room is closed. It beckons me, yet repels me, exuding a sense of silent occupation. My ears buzz. A singsong chorus of whispers grows as I approach.
Are you ready?
I am here.
You attract them.
Are you ready?
Prepare for what lies ahead.
Prepare.
Prepare.
They mount and mount into a dizzying jumble of sound and I run the rest of the way to the door, my heart in my chest, my eyes squeezed shut. Grasping the knob, I fling open the door. The voices die away.
I knew it would be there. But it doesn’t stop me from gasping as every part of me curls back in on itself in horror. My blood turns to ice.
Seated at the table is a woman, or what used to be a woman. She sits as if she has every right to be there, as if she has always been there. A veil covers her face, but it is gauzy and threadbare, and I can see the contours of the features beneath. Her dress is old, black as night yet opalescent as the moon through a cobweb. Paralyzed with fear, I watch as it moves about her of its own accord, a soft undulation as if she were underwater. And though I can see her as clear as day, the veiled woman in our dining room, there’s a translucence to her, and the panoramic wallpaper is just visible behind her. She is like nothing and no one I have ever seen before, and yet she is familiar, as if I have always known her.
“Come, child.” Her voice comes from everywhere and nowhere, and when her words are finished, I have the unnerving feeling that they weren’t spoken aloud at all, but came from within my head.
She beckons me with a knobby finger, more bone than flesh.
I can’t drag my gaze away from her face, the sunken holes where there ought to be eyes, the lipless mouth, all teeth and blackness. The cold pie that I just enjoyed churns in my stomach and threatens to come up. She beckons me again, and I imagine those long, terrible fingers closing around my neck and choking the life out of me. I imagine them raking me across the face until ribbons of skin flutter from my skull. I stand my ground, unwilling to deliver myself up to her. She is the stuff of my novels, a grotesque horror that titillates on the page, but sends terror into my heart when in the same room as me.
She gives something like a grunt, and as if able to read my thoughts, says, “One hundred and thirty years of death is not gentle on a body. Come, do not gawk.” I dare not disobey her, so I force my leaden feet to move a few steps closer.
The smell of decay and death fills the room, sickly sweet and putrid at the same time. My stomach clenches at the memories the odour brings back of Emeline in her coffin. My throat is tight, my mouth cotton, but somehow I’m able to gasp out, “W-who are you?”
She makes a noise, something between a snort and a laugh, a scraping, rattling sound, though it’s devoid of humour. “Do you not know your own forebear?”
The blackness of her dress curls around her like a snake, but she sits as motionless as if she were carved of stone. Her still¬ness is suffocating, it dares the house to be silent, and punishes the sunlight for filtering in through the window.
Warily, I come to a halt at the edge of the dining room table. I don’t know what she’s talking about. “Forebear?”
“Have you not looked upon me since you were a babe? Do you not recognize in me what flows through you?”
“I…” But then it comes to me. The lace collar, though tattered and black as her dress, is unmistakable around her neck. “You’re the woman in the painting. Mother’s ancestor.”
The inclination of her head is small, barely perceptible.

The Bastard’s Bargain Excerpt

Copyright © 2018 Katee Robert

Dmitri Romanov didn’t permit himself to breathe a sigh of relief. This was only the first step in a path that could potentially span years. It didn’t matter. Keira was here—was his. He had time.

He watched her look around the inside of the town car, cataloging everything with those witchy hazel eyes of hers. The faint scent of pot filled the car, giving evidence to what she’d been up to when he called. The woman was a mess, but he’d known that from the moment he met her. Dmitri didn’t do projects. He preferred to be the one holding all the cards—it allowed him to anticipate how the people around him would act in any given situation.

He’d never been able to anticipate Keira. Not from the moment she picked his pocket and walked away from him as if she didn’t give a fuck about the danger he posed to her.

Likely because she has a goddamn death wish.

He’d deal with that, just like he’d deal with the rest of Keira’s issues. In time.

Right that moment, time was the one thing they didn’t have. Keira’s oldest brother would be returning to Boston within hours, and Dmitri fully intended to marry her before Aiden realized she was gone. It was significantly more difficult to oust a wife than it was a fiancée.

He had Keira now. He wasn’t going to let anyone take her.

She kicked her feet out, propping her chunky black boots on the seat. The long line of her bare legs drew his gaze up to her tiny sleep shorts. They were barely more than underwear, hugging her hips and ass. Her shirt wasn’t much better, for all that it was long-sleeved. It revealed a slice of pale stomach and was fitted enough that he had absolutely no doubts about the fact that Keira wore no bra. Her small breasts pressed against the fabric, and she shivered beneath the weight of his gaze.

Get control of yourself. He leaned forward and nudged her boots back to the floorboard. Taking Keira was part of the plan—fucking her in the backseat was not. “There’s no need for an adolescent tantrum.”

She laughed, the sound rough and pain filled. “God, would you listen to yourself? You just showed up at my window to lure me into the night—to a chapel—and now you’re bitching about my shoes on the seats? Russian, you have your priorities seriously out of order.” She flicked her long hair off her shoulder. She’d dyed it a harsh blond that seemed designed to highlight how unhealthily skinny she’d become in the last year.

She’s spiraling.

Not anymore.

“Our current situation is no reason to throw propriety out the window.” He sounded stuffy, and he hated it, but with her sitting so close, wearing clothing she’d just been sleeping in…Dmitri dragged in a breath. “Keep your shoes on the floor.”

“Or what?” She turned to face him. The move pulled her shirt even tighter against her chest, revealing the faintest outline of her nipples. Keira saw where his gaze went, and gave a bitter smile. “All the games, all the bullshit, and that hasn’t changed.” She leaned forward and hooked his collar with her finger, drawing him closer despite himself. “Tell me something, Romanov.”

“Hmm?” He dragged his gaze up to her mouth. The wicked curve of her lips was matched only by the words she threw into the space between them with such abandon. The woman wouldn’t know caution if it slapped her in the face.

“You’re dragging me to your cave to be your Bride of Frankenstein.” She shifted closer, her bare leg sliding over his slacks until her thigh came into contact with his cock.

He should move her. Set her back and explain that no matter what she thought of the situation, she wasn’t in control. But the ring he’d put on her finger winked at him, a reminder that Keira wasn’t the sister of his enemy anymore. She was his.

Or she would be in a few short hours.

He bracketed her thigh with a hand, keeping her in place, but didn’t touch her anywhere else. There was no masking his reaction to her, not in their position. Dmitri didn’t bother trying. “Calling me Frankenstein is more than a bit dramatic.”

She looked up at him, her eyes holding a question he didn’t have a satisfying answer to. “I think it’s time to stop being in denial, don’t you?”

He recognized the direction she was headed. “You know I want you. I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t.”

Just like that, the shutters slammed down on her expression. She sat back and he let her go, watching her pull herself together. Her spine went ramrod straight, and she stared at the back of the driver’s head rather than at Dmitri. She crossed her arms over her chest. “No lies between us. That’s what you said. You want me, sure, but don’t pretend any of this bullshit has to do with sex. You need to prove what an international badass you are by marrying the sister of your enemy. An eye for an eye—a wife and a sister. Remember?”

He knew exactly what she was quoting. The note he’d had delivered to Aiden O’Malley just over a year ago. By my count, you owe me both a wife and a sister. I’ll be content with one of yours. He hadn’t realized Keira had seen it.

Twin possibilities spun out between them. She was scared and vulnerable, and if he told her that it was her he wanted and not what she represented, she would believe him. It would even be the truth, at least in part. He hadn’t been able to get Keira out of his head from the moment he met her, and he’d manipulated events to ensure they reached this exact moment.

Telling her that wasn’t telling her the full truth, though. This wasn’t some great love story where he’d been pining for her while her family kept them apart. Dmitri wanted her, yes. He craved the feeling of her body beneath his hands, her taste on his tongue, and her smart mouth around his cock.

But his craving her had no real relevance in the grand scheme of things. He needed one of the O’Malley daughters to regain his status after the blows the family had dealt him over the last two years. Keira was the only option left.

Liar.

It didn’t matter what the truth was, full or otherwise. What mattered was ensuring Keira toed the line. He sat back, trying to ignore the throbbing of his cock, and studied her. “You knew what this was when you climbed out your window and stepped between me and your brother.”

She finally met his gaze, her hazel eyes fiery in their defiance. “Yes, I did.”

Roman is desperate to get V and his memories back together! Each time V wakes up he slips a little further into madness. Roman is worried that the time will come where he cannot drag his friend back from the verge of insanity.

On the quest for V’s sword, which is also tied to his sanity, they land in Romania and are drawn towards Sabina and her brother. Sabina is Romani but her mother left her nomadic tribe and settled with her new husband on a farm and Sabina and brother had a settled life. Now left to care for her brother on her own, Sabina makes her living selling jewellery online. Camlo, well he is a real Dr Doolittle , he can talk to any animal, which has made him a target for bullies, along with his size.

When V and Roman appear nearby, she feels weirdly safe with them and Camlo takes to them like old friends. She soon realises that they are part of a story told to her by her grandmother before she left the tribe. But how does she tell Roman, who she has intense feelings for, that her family is responsible for V’s madness?!?!

Roman is staunch, sexy and a solid friend. Sabina is intelligent, endearing and sassy. Camlo is just all things sweet and such a beautiful, naïve, innocent character in the middle of all the chaos.

There are enough back history points, that even if you have missed a book or two in the series (how very dare you!) you can still follow along with the story arc. Great staff and can’t wait for more!

I shouted over the noise, “Secure the women and cubs and meet back here. Regroup quickly, don’t get singled out.” I watched the clouds above build on top of each other like mountains of pitch black wool. Lightning flashed giving short glimpses of the chaos around me. I continued my search for Jackie. My mate had taken off to help with the cubs, but I had lost her in the fray. Gunfire erupted to my right and I veered left, Sterling following me. “I have to find Jackie, she’s not answering me through the bond.”
Jerome, I’m sure she’s with the other women. We need to help the rest. They need a leader right now, someone has to tell them what to do and where to go.” He grabbed my arm to stop me.
I took a deep breath. He was right. I fought my wolf for control. I would have felt it through the mate bond if something had happened to her. “Okay, our only option right now is to flee. We weren’t prepared for this attack, and they cut us off from the armory. Let’s gather all we can and head for the tunnels.”
“Lead the way, boss, I’m right behind you.”
Sterling and I took advantage of each flash of lightning to gather the pack. We led them to the tunnels constructed for times like this. They wove through the country coming out at a safe house that was more of a lean-to than a house at this point. Sterling and I had thrown it together in a few days after the hunts began. We were the last ones to enter the tunnel, having ushered the pack ahead of us, many of them running on four paws instead of two legs.
An explosion rocked the tunnels when Sterling and I were halfway through. Dirt and debris fell forcing us to turn back the way we had come and separating us from the rest of the pack. We emerged covered in dirt, coughing it out of our lungs, and found ourselves surrounded by armed men and robed women. The men raised their guns and the women raised their arms, the sleeves of their robes falling back and symbols on their skin began to glow as they chanted.
“Witches,” Sterling growled beneath his breath.
The clouds lowered and lightning struck the ground around us raising the hairs on my arm with the electricity.  I searched for a way out as four of the circle moved to form a  gap, their arms still raised to the sky. Two tall and thick muscular forms lumbered slowly through. I couldn’t make out their faces as the shadows hid them from view. The clouds swirled around their feet as series of lightning strikes illuminated the space that opened between them. The last strike of light was timed perfectly as they tossed a limp female form next to use in the circle.
“No!” I screamed when I recognized Jackie through our bond before I saw her face. She had been badly beaten. They tossed her on the ground like a rag doll, and before I could reach her the lightning struck again, this time within the circle of witches. Once, twice, and finally a third time. I fell to my knees, howling in pain as the mating bond was ripped away, and a part of my soul with it. I crawled to her as gunfire erupted around me. I didn’t care what happened at that moment, I prayed for death to take me. For a bullet to find my heart and end this pain, but the bullets weren’t aimed at Sterling or I. The circle of people around us fell one at a time. With the witches dead, the clouds dissipated, and the sun returned to illuminate the death and destruction left behind.
A black SUV stopped a few feet from us. The passenger side door opened revealing a shifter I had never before met. He stepped over the bodies and looked down at me. “We need to have a chat, Alpha. Let me help you with your mate when you are ready. Let me provide a proper send off and burial. The threat of hunters is gone, take your time.” He looked at Sterling. “Signal me when you are ready.”
“What about those that made it through the tunnel?” Sterling asked.
“I’m sorry, there are no survivors. Just you two, and those you hid elsewhere.”
I ignored the rest of their conversation as I lay down next to Jackie and wept.
