The Darkest Corner (Gravediggers #1) by Liliana Hart

What a novel idea! The Gravediggers are an elite collection of Spec Ops & former Spies who, for one reason or another, have been labelled as traitors to their country of origin. With a mix of Aussie, Brits, Israeli and Americans, the personalities are a similar smorgasbord! They were given a lifeline by the enigmatic but ruthless Eve Winter, die and rise to live again under her authority and after 7 years service they are free to create a new life for themselves.

The last place you’d look for excitement, never mind secret squirrel adventures, is Last Stop, Tx. Tess is a native and she sometimes revels in the thought of leaving this sleepy backwater. But with a kleptomaniac, gambling addict and all around self centre mother and a grandmother who is far removed from your stereotypical granny figure, Tess just can’t seem to escape.

She loves running the funeral home but her new boss keeps hiring strapping, handsome men to work with her and there is no way they have enough funerals to pay everyone, but sure enough, cash never seems to be a problem!

Deacon was the first of the Gravediggers to be “resurrected” and still suffers from bouts of claustrophobia. He has been at the funeral home with Tess the longest. He has a real connection to Tess, but with his unpredictable life and his lying to her about his job, well he doesn’t think he stands a chance.

Add in an attack by Russian terrorists, snarky team mates, Machiavellian plots by Eve Winter and scorching romance and you have yourself a superb read! Tess gets drawn into the Gravediggers fold with her talent for Old Russian, beeps the Sheriffs radar with the weird movements of the team and still finds team to deal with her dysfunctional family.

I loved meeting Miller, Tess’ best friend and the other gravediggers, including the newest member who gives Tess a fright with his awakening! Great pacing, snarky but loving banter between the team and story-line that feels very believable!

Blaze (Dark Kings #11) by Donna Grant

Love doesn’t come easily to these Dragon Kings!

Devon has clawed her way to the top at Kyvor. She has sidelined any kind of personal life as she wants to ensure she makes it to the top.

When Anson she finds bumps into her, she recognises him as just the kind Alpha male she needs, one that won’t buckle at the fact that she is a successful woman under her own merit. But when he reveals who he is and just what is happening behind closed doors at Kyvor, she joins the fight against the druids.

Fabulous mix of action, adventure and romance!

Forbidden Promises (O’Malleys #4) by Katee Robert

Everyone always says it’s the quiet girls you have to watch out for…Sloane epitomises that in spades!!

Sloan managed to get away from her Irish Mob family. She is sick of being sheltered from their dealings and wants a clean break. She finally gets far away from their influence. Now in Washington State, she is as far as she could get from life in Boston. She scrapes a living in a diner and rents a small house from a relative of her sister in law. The only blip on her humdrum but oh so safe life…the grumpy hottie next door!

Jude has other thongs on his mind than the little mouse who moved next door. He’s a skilled hitman and she is messing with his assignment! His revenge has been stewing for decades and he can feel it in his grasp. Colm will feel his wrath and he’ll be rid of the spectre’s of his past. He does not need Sloane complicating matters.

This was not my usual read and not something I’d generally consider. But I cannot deny it was a finely crafted piece of work. The characters leap off the page and whilst they are from the murkier side of life, they all have some characteristics you can admire; loyalty, resilience, etc. The tangled web of the 3 Irish Mob families and the lurking menace of the Russian Mob give a great sense of danger and a great backdrop on which to play out this every emotion driven story.

My only main quibble was that the bookcover model didn’t gel with the description of Jude. Where was my manbun wearing “Brock”? But other than that a great story.

Water Borne (Halcyon Romance #3) by Rachael Slate

Essa has been isolated from her father, Nereus by her aunt and trained to take over as Pythia, Oracle to Apollo. She is satisfied with her life, only mourning the mother she never knew, who had died in childbirth. But when she is caught up in nets, she is rescued by a huge winged man…one who makes her heart go pitty pat!

Nazrin has secrets of his own. He knows that Essa is his mate, something unusual for his kind. But he is not the only male in the running and his protective/possessive streak rears its ugly head! Training Essa only adds to the complications…knowing that she is to betray him, and Halcyon, eventually.

With her amulet lost, she needs to rely on Nazrin to find it. Nazrin needs the amulet to cure his niece, who due to her mixed species heritage, is not faring well. Add in a blood betrothal between Essa and Kai, cyclops and all manner of other mythological folk and you have yourself a gem of a read!

Another fab read in the Halcyon series and it was lovely to see even crotchety, narky, stubborn males like Nazrin get a HEA. Essa came across as quite naive, which fit with her being secluded away. But she gains a new perspective as the story unfolds and she learns her and Nazrins part in the Gods plan.

Ross Hoffman held the potential for a perfect life in his hands—a life with Evelyn, the only woman he’d ever allowed himself to love, their baby, and…her husband, Austin Fitzgerald, who also happened to be his best friend. But the challenge of trying to make a threesome into something acceptable—much less the thought of actually sharing Evelyn with anyone—forces him to bolt. Determined to put all thoughts of their relationship behind him, Ross jumps headfirst into a new brewery job in Colorado, and back into the sort of sexual decadence that he hopes will distract him from his misery.

When he agrees to assist Austin through a spate of brewery mishaps, he lays eyes on his true fate—in the form of the petite, mysterious, and exotic Elisa Nagel. Hired as assistant brewer, Elisa is absolutely everything he believes he doesn’t want in a woman. But he’s drawn to her in ways he can’t explain, and can’t help but fall hard, fast, and deep, which places him square the middle of her horrific, until-now secret backstory.

Ross is determined that his love will conquer and overcome the horrors of Elisa’s past, allowing her to trust him with the only thing he desires—her heart.

“You really know how to make yourself scarce, don’t you?” Austin said by way of greeting.

Ross grunted a reply as he sat gingerly down into a chair at the kitchen table. The sunlight blaring through the window pierced him right in the eyeballs. It shoved the spike of pain nice and deep into his brainpan, blinding and deafening him for a few seconds. “What? Sorry. I’m a little fragile this morning.”

“Whatever, dude. So, can you come?”

“I already told Evelyn I would.” He couldn’t keep the snippy tone out of his voice. It was all he could do at that moment not to puke all over the expensive hardwood floor.

“What? When did you talk to her?” Austin sounded frazzled. But he’d sounded that way ever since Rose’s birth.

“Shit man, I don’t remember. What the hell day is it anyway?”

“What happened to Mr. Pure Living?”

“He got gang banged by a pack of succubus, all right? Cut him a break.”

“Nice,” Austin said. Ross couldn’t tell if he were amused or honestly pissed off.

“Whatever. So yeah, I told her at some point I’d help you guys. I’m somewhat persona non grata around here all of a sudden, anyway.” He rubbed his eyes. “Seriously, what day is it?”

Austin’s heavy sigh set Ross’ sensitive on edge. But he sat still, willing the clanging agony in his head to stop, knowing getting angry would only exacerbate it. “It’s Wednesday morning, eleven a.m. where I am, which makes it nine where you are.”

Shocked at the lost twenty-four hours, he lurched forward, which sent a jolt of nausea up his throat. “Oh, shit.”

“Yeah. So, I guess you heard it all, then. If you talked to Evelyn?”

“I, uh, don’t know,” he hedged as he stumbled to the kitchen sink just in case. The silence on the other end of the line made his pulse race. His good buddy was getting a tad bit bossy and Ross was in zero mood for it. “Guess you should tell me whatever the fuck it all is. Since the last I spoke to Evelyn it was Monday night. Tuesday seems to have been sucked away, along with every ounce of my—”

“Spare me.”

“Dude, just fill me in. Holly showed up here that same night and I’m pretty sure she drugged me or something.”

“Poor little snowflake,” Austin said, amusement clear in his voice this time.

“Yeah. I sure as hell wish I could remember any of it.” He touched his sore dick before pressing fingertips against the many, tiny burned spots and gouges on his chest. “So, anyway, what’s going on now, drama king?”

“Oh, not much I guess. Other than my wife was nearly raped and killed by a psycho almost-ex-employee before he got popped between the eyes by my strange new German lady brewer.”

“You really shouldn’t mess with me right now.” Ross kept his head lowered, waiting for the inevitable over the sink.

“I’m not.”

“Evelyn was…is she all right?” He poured another glass of water and forced it past the rising gorge in his throat.

“Yes. Thanks to Elisa Nagel, she is. Although that woman is now in custody and I gotta go post a two hundred fifty thou bail and get her scary ass in front of my lawyer.”

“Elisa…who?” The room had commenced spinning so he squeezed his eyes shut. “Oh, right. The Berliner brewer chick.” But he knew damn well who she was. Fronting with confusion was his reflex to counter the surge of emotion that had muscled past his pain at the sound of her name.

Hemi (Hell Squad #13) by Anna Hackett

Hemi is the first of the Berserkers to get a HEA!

Hemi and his fellow former mercenaries, bikers and ex-cons make up the infamous Berserkers. They are hard core, Alpha to the nth degree and maybe not bring-home-to-mum kinda men but they get the job done and you can rely on them to blow the Gizzida back to wherever they came from!

Cam is a top-notch soldier, male or female. She is driven to the end of her well worn tether by a certain Kiwi Bad boy. He bedazzled her helmet for cripes sake! The man may ooze sex appeal but Cam wants to get rid of the Gizzida, not scratch an itch with the resident no.1 bad-boy!

Creepers are closing in on my top 5 of creepiness that the Gizzisa have wrought on Hell Squad and the rest of the survivors. But will even Hemi be able to survive their slobbering maws? Will he be forever changed by their pods?

Hemi is everything you want in a bad boy. Charming when he wants to be, creative, loving and downright HAWT! You learn more about his family and you can’t help but love him when he talks about his madcap family. Cam is slow to the “Hemi likes you party”, even though the rest of the team are like “FINALLY!!”

I cannot wait to see what happens with the rest of the Berserkers. I want to know the next lucky couple are going to be as full on, passionate and hard-headed stubborn as there two were. Stubborn just means they’ll be page melting hot when they finally get together!

Snarky, funny, witty banter wrapped into a tightly controlled but expanding world of alien invasion. Perfect!

Rogue Wolf (Aspen Valley Wolf Pack #7) by Amber Ella Monroe

Deacon Remy left town under a cloud. His father and mother were wastes of space and his grandfather left a mountain of debt after his death. But he has his finances in order after working pretty much non stop the last few years. He has returned to pay off his creditors and then he can leave with his head held high once more.

Monica is a bit of silver spoon baby. her dad is a well off Doctor and she is a Paediatric nurse. She narrowly missed being married off to the reprehensible ex – who I won’t even name! Deacon comes to Monica’s rescue at the roadside and she is aware of his shifter status, he doesn’t hide it and she really doesn’t care. Bu when her father all but runs him off with his rude and almost bigoted behaviour, Monica thinks she has seen the last of the hunky Deacon.

The story is fact paced, full on action and the passion is sparking from the moment these two meet! A great story within the wilder Aspen Valley World. It was nice to see some of the previous book in a kind of “different perspective” as they overlap in time slightly. Great read!

Dragon’s Kiss (Red Planet Dragons Of Tajss #5) by Miranda Martin

Olivia is a data analyst, dammit, not a survival expert! She is not cut out for sweltering hot, alien worlds! But with the rest of the surviving crew members she is doing her best to survive on this weird planet. When her group of survivors are visited by strangers, she is pulled inexorably to the tall, tailed Ragnar. She feels she keeps making a prat of herself in his presence, there is no way someone that hot is interested in little ole her. She can’t even talk to him due to the language barrier.

Ragnar has found his treasure. He will do everything in his power to keep Olivia safe. They might not be able to talk but body language has a definite place in this relationship! As they make their way towards the Zmaj city that the other survivors have made home, they get a nasty surprise on their arrival, Ladon won’t let them in!

But with the wily women that the Zmaj have mated on their side, Olivia and the others won’t be left out in the heat for too long!

I loved the instalanguage comp! I could do with one of them myself. Ragnar is sweetly domineering and possessive but would do anything to keep Olivia safe. Olivia feels like she is unworthy of the hotness that is Ragnar but under his care, she slowly recognises herself as one kick but leader!
